Parent Responsibilities

Kingdom Preparatory Academy is a Christian University-Model School©. Because of this, both parent involvement and student cooperation are essential if KPA is to successfully fulfill its mission, a mission that includes a vital spiritual element. Therefore, as a condition of acceptance to this school, the parents of each student applying for admission must be in agreement with the school's doctrinal position. It is also necessary that Kingdom Preparatory Academy have parent and student guidelines to facilitate the acceptance of those students appropriately suited for a Christian University-Model School format. The parent guidelines are as follows:

Parent Guidelines:

¨ Parents must be in agreement with the school's purpose and spiritual objectives and be willing to abide by the school's rules and regulations.

¨ Parents must be committed to the parental responsibility for providing a quality, Christian education for their children in accordance with existing law.

¨ Parents must be willing to act in the role of co-instructor, receiving instructions from the classroom teacher on a regular basis outlining the homework assignment, follow- up study over covered material, and any preparation or review needed for their next class. Parents must also be willing to take extensive responsibility for direct instruction in some aspects of the course, and for monitoring their child's academic progress (including timely submission of all assignments). In addition parents should:

  1. Be willing to discuss with their child matters of belief, morality, and values as they arise in relation to the reading content of the course.
  2. Monitor their child's completion of all extended reading assignments, to insure that such assignments are paced appropriately and completed on schedule.
  3. Assist their child, as may be necessary, in organizing his or her thoughts with regard to analytical and critical essays; since such essays often require a more involved thought process.
  4. Provide their child with an audience before whom he or she might practice speeches and other similar presentations.
  5. Assist their child, as may be appropriate, in gathering the needed research and study materials which may include transporting him or her to libraries outside of school.
  6. Be willing to assist their child in locating scripture references needed for discussions, tests, or projects.
  7. Be willing to assist their child by proofreading his or her written work.

¨ Parents must be active members of a Christian church that is in keeping with Kingdom Preparatory Academy’s Statement of Faith.

¨ Parents must be willing to provide Kingdom Preparatory Academy with a completed application form for each child applying for admission.

¨ Parents must be in agreement with, and supportive of, the school’s procedures for handling student discipline.

Policy Guidlines

General Discipline

* All discipline cases referred to the office for handling are to be accompanied by a discipline form (pink slip) completed by a staff member.

* For mild offenses, such as dress code issues or mild classroom disruptions, a student will be issued "discipline referral warning" (white slip). These forms do not need to be signed and returned to the office; however, they will be documented in the student’s file.

* Any discipline matter deemed to be of an urgent or potentially dangerous nature should be brought immediately to the attention of the administration. It will not be necessary to notify the administration immediately of discipline problems of a routine or non-serious nature. These problems will be handled at such times and in such a manner as shall be convenient to the administration.

* The student shall be given an opportunity to correct his own behavior following the first offense of a routine or non-serious nature, and the parents shall not be notified unless the student or staff member involved specifically requests that they be notified. The parents shall be notified of any subsequent offenses. A copy of the relevant discipline referral form shall be sent home with them for this purpose, and both parents will be asked to sign and return the form indicating that they have read and understood it.

* An administrative staff member will personally attend to serious, urgent, or potentially dangerous discipline matters, and the parents will always be notified in such cases. The administrative staff member shall enjoy a broad range of personal authority to act in such activities.

* Should repeated or serious first-time violations of the student code of conduct or dress code occur, a student might be suspended or expelled.

* After a student receives his/her third discipline referral form (pink slip) in a given semester, a family conference will be called. Both parents will be required to attend, unless authorized by the administration. The student will not be allowed to return to class until the meeting is held and resolution has taken place.

* After a disciplinary conference has been called, the student will be placed on a probationary status as determined by the Administration. Therefore, at this point, the student runs the risk of possible expulsion.

* Any disciplinary action, be it a "white slip" or a "pink slip" will be emailed to the parent’s email address and can be reviewed under each student’s web site through RenWeb by clicking the discipline tab.

STUDENT DISCIPLINE PROCEDURES

"Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it."

Proverbs 22:6

The keys to discipline are that the child must feel he is loved, that he knows and accepts the boundaries of behavior, and that he sees the proper direction in which to head, to avoid repeated wrong decisions. The key to discipline for a school is that it gives its children support and direction while also working in harmony with the home. The primary goal of the KPA staff will be to practice preventative discipline through the use of good teaching techniques. As the need arises, the school may also employ mild forms of reproof, rebuke, and correction in order to encourage cooperation among the student body. Under no circumstances does KPA practice spanking or similar forms of corporal punishment. We believe that this biblical method of correction is best used by the parents. The school will control the impact of serious discipline problems by limiting or withdrawing the participation privileges of consistently uncooperative students. As a parent-based school, Kingdom Preparatory Academy feels that the school staff is primarily responsible to utilize mild forms of reproof, rebuke, and correction for the purpose of sound classroom management and that the parents are primarily responsible for dealing with discipline problems of an ongoing or more serious nature. This, in effect, is the general theory that informs the General Discipline Policy Guidelines.
