To finish our habitat unit, the first grade students each memorized a part of a chant highlighting a biome. They performed their chant in front of the kindergartners in Mrs Laughery’s class. Each student also authored and illustrated a book modeled after the “Brown Bear, Brown Bear What do you See?” and read them to the class. We’re so proud of these amazing first graders!
3rd grade is working through our Plant Unit in Science. Did you know we can eat lots of different plant parts? We explored different plant parts and their functions during our “Make a Meal” project!

This podcast looks at some of the reasons we study old books. Dr. DePoe give three reasons to study the old books: (1) they inspire hearts; (2) they sharpen minds; and (3) they cultivate character. Then, he addresses some of the common objections to reading them: (1) they are impractical and irrelevant to the 21st century; (2) they lack diversity and contribute to racism and other injustices in our world; and (3) they do not teach the beliefs and values of the Christian worldview. Our hope is that this podcast equips you to understand the value of a curriculum filled with "old books."

We’ve had another exciting week in first grade with lots of hands on learning experiences. We’ve introduced fact families and are discovering all the ways to make 10 with our “friends of ten” activities.
So far during our habitats unit we’ve explored ponds, temperate forest, tundra, and grasslands. Mrs Poe, our knowledgeable Rhetoric Biology teacher, was gracious to help us discover some organisms that live in ponds by lending us microscopes and telling us about what we were seeing. Thank you Mrs Poe!
Our students also practiced their writing skills by creating family trees. Come see them on display outside the first grade classrooms.
As part of a weather unit, 2nd graders learned more about how tornados form by making “tornado bottles”!

This sweet, talented bunch of 3rd-5th grade students are already working hard towards their Fall Concert.

The first grade wrapped up the unit on continents and oceans by making and painting salt maps. Then we celebrated with our Continent Cafe. Every student brought a homemade food representing continents around the world for everyone to sample. After tasting foods like fairy bread, egg rolls, and mango pudding, we had a fast round of hands-on stations. Thank you families for the delicious foods you prepared and helping make the Continent Cafe a successful and memorable experience.
Last Friday, the 4th and 5th grade classes started painting their own Cave Paintings, after learning about the largest cave paintings in the world in Lascaux, France. Students sketched an image of a bull. Then they crushed pigments and mixed them with their own saliva, just like the cave artists! Students then began painting their bulls with their mixed paint and their fingers! Students had a blast and will finish their projects this week - look for them to be up on display upstairs near the Grammar Art room soon!

School of Logic Art students are working through a survey of the Elements of Art. We are currently covering the Elements of Value and Space. Students have used Vermeer's "The Girls with the Pearl Earring" and Rembrant's "Still Life of Fruit" for inspiration and reference. We created overlapping pumpkins to show depth and an understanding of space, and demonstrated value using oil pastel blending. Students are doing a fantastic job, we can't wait to see our finished projects!
